A gantry crane is an overhead crane that has one or two beams supported by freestanding legs and moves on wheels, a track, or a rail system carrying a bridge, trolley, and hoist. The L-type gantry crane is one type of gantry crane that is a single-beam crane with obvious L-shaped supporting legs.

The bridge frame of the L-type gantry crane is a box-shaped structure. It consists of a gantry frame, L-type supporting legs, an electric trolley and crane traveling mechanism, and all electric equipment. The control methods are cabin, remote control, and pendent line.

The design of the L-shaped gantry crane legs makes it capable of handling long pieces with light weight and low overall height; the structure is compact, resulting in cost savings; and it is a cost-effective gantry crane with respect to A-type and U-type gantry cranes. The load capacity of an L-shaped gantry crane ranges between five and fifty tons, with a light dead weight and small wheel pressure. It can be designed with a soft start for long travel operations; this ensures stable and smooth movement.
